A Whale Of A Time

Today Lily, Tony, and I went whale watching. We had a wonderful time even before we saw the whales. The view of the harbor from the water was really beautiful and the weather was absolutely perfect!

For a while it looked like we might not see any whales. In fact, the captain was giving his "It's called a 'Whale Watch' and not a 'Whale See'...life doesn't come with a guarantee" speech when lo and behold someone spotted a spout at 3 o'clock....and then another at 8 o'clock and then...another.

We saw a total of 6 whales, 5 Finbacks and 1 Minke. The Finbacks were absolutely ENORMOUS! The pictures don't do them justice. The Minke was considerably smaller and didn't stick around long enough for us to get a good look at him.

Our first sighting!

This guy was HUGE!

Lily was wonderful on the boat and had fun looking for the whales. As it turned out, she stayed awake just long enough to see the first whale and then promptly fell asleep for the next 2 and a half hours and didn't wake back up until we got back to the harbor!

Whales? What Whales?

Whale watching was such a neat experience. Seeing these huge creatures up close was positively breathtaking. I know I wasn't the only person that felt this way. When the whales were visible you could have heard a pin drop on deck!

Tony got some great video of the whales...but I'm too tired to upload it right now! All that ocean air has gotten the best of me!

PS - Thanks for the tip about dressing warmly, Aunt Teresa! It was a beautiful sunny day but really, really freezing out there!!
